Bee escape "Star" for easy removal of bees from honey supers before honey extraction.
Bee escapes are becoming increasingly popular among beekeepers. Once a beekeeper has tried a bee escape in practice, they appreciate how easy and quick it is to remove honey frames for extraction.
To install the bee escape, you need to make a solid divider for the honey section of the hive. A round hole of about 70mm in diameter is made in the centre of this divider, and the bee escape is fixed in place using nails, screws, rivets, a stapler, etc. Wood, plywood or plastic can be used as the base for mounting the bee escape; sometimes even strong glass is used.
The bee escape is usually fitted overnight before honey extraction. It should be placed between the honey and brood sections of the hive. Entrances in the honey supers are closed. The bees pass through the cone-shaped opening into the brood section of the hive and remain there. The next day, the honey supers can be removed without spending effort on inspection. As a rule, with the help of a bee escape, the bees leave the honey supers almost completely.
To prevent brood in the honey supers, it is recommended to use queen excluders (Polish or French), which prevent the queen bee from leaving the brood box.
