Numbering hives and colonies is very important in the apiary and helps keep everything organised. Numbers should not simply be painted onto the hive; they should be a separate plate or digit. This is necessary so that, if required, a colony can be moved to another hive together with the number assigned to that bee colony. After all, in an apiary it is the colonies that are numbered, not the hives. The numbers should be made from quality materials that can withstand outdoor conditions such as wind, rain and sunlight. This ensures that the number plates will last for more than one season.
