Honey Extractors

One of a beekeeper’s favourite, yet most painstaking, tasks is harvesting honey. To extract honey from comb frames, a special device known as a honey extractor is used. It has a barrel-like shape, with uncapped frames placed inside. During extraction, the honey flows out of the comb onto the walls of the honey extractor and collects at the bottom.

Honey extractors are divided into two types:

• Radial. In these honey extractors, the baskets are arranged along the radii of a circle. Their distinctive feature is that they use the non-horizontal positioning of the cells in the comb. Radial honey extractors are considered the most productive, as they can hold from 20 to 50 frames at a time.
• Tangential. This type of honey extractor is divided into reversible models, where the baskets with frames can easily be turned to the other side, and non-reversible models, where the frames have to be removed in order to turn them.
