It is the colonies that should be numbered, not just the hives. This helps you keep structured and systematic records of the condition of each bee colony, any changes, productivity and more.
Plastic hive numbers are one of the most practical and economical options for numbering colonies. They also look neat and distinctive on hives.
The numbers are supplied on a plate, from which they can be easily removed. One plate contains 15 digits: 0 – one, 1 – three, 2 – two, 3 – three, 4 – two, 5 – one, 6 – one, 7 – one, 8 – one, 9 – one. For fixing to hives, they have 
two holes – at the top and bottom of each number. The number plates can be attached to the hive with small nails or glued in place.
