In every Jenter comb kit, cell cups are supplied as part of the set. The Jenter comb has a total of 112 holes for inserting the base plugs. The base plugs and cell cups are among the most delicate parts of the kit. They can easily become deformed if water that is too hot is used for cleaning, or they may simply get lost. Many beekeepers who rear queen bees commercially do not clean these small parts, but simply fit new ones.
Jenter comb cell cups are the size of a natural queen cell. Queen bees reared using Jenter cell cups meet all quality standards. When connected to the base plug, the cell cup looks like a single complete piece with no visible joint. Thanks to this connection, the larva in the cell cup is readily accepted by the bees for queen rearing. The bees immediately start building out the queen cell and caring for the queen larva.
Jenter cell cups and base plugs can also be used separately from the system for queen rearing or for obtaining royal jelly. For grafting, one-day-old larvae are transferred with a grafting tool. With this method, there is no guarantee that there will be enough royal jelly in the cell for the larva to develop fully. Therefore, after the queen cells have developed, they should be culled, leaving only well-formed queen cells for further development.
The cell cup in the Jenter comb is the part most worked by the bees. It is always built out into a wax queen cell, and cleaning it can sometimes be quite difficult. For cleaning, hot water at the wax melting temperature of 65 °C should be used, but this work must be carried out with extreme care while checking for possible deformation of the cell cup. After the wax has been removed, the cell cup should have a perfectly even, round rim. At the slightest deformation, the cell cup should be replaced with a new one.
