The thin cage, art. 040, is supplied in some standard Jenter comb kits. It is designed for isolating a queen cell or queen bee in the hive. The specially shaped cap securely closes the passage for bees. Inside the cap, there is space to place a few grams of candy/fondant to feed the queen bee during isolation. The cage itself is made so that it can be attached to a cell cup (with a queen cell) or to the yellow holder, giving it particular versatility compared with the thick cages, which fit only onto the yellow holders.
Often, when there is a good food supply, bees build a considerable amount of wax comb around the queen cell. When moving the queen bee into the cage, excess wax must be cut away carefully so as not to damage the larva.
Thin roller cages are convenient in beekeeping for introducing a queen bee into a new colony or split. Thanks to the option of placing feed inside the cage, the queen bee can live in confinement for about a week.
