Propolis is a beneficial resinous substance that bees collect from tree buds and use in the hive as a building material.

Bees cannot deposit propolis directly on the hive cover; for this purpose, special mesh mats need to be placed over the top of the frames, with the openings being filled with propolis. The mesh opening size is specially selected so that a bee’s head cannot pass through it, so all openings are quickly sealed with this useful substance.

Collecting propolis:

  After the honey harvest, mesh mats that are already filled with propolis are removed from the bee colonies and replaced with clean ones, which then remain on the colonies over winter.
  Mesh mats filled with propolis should be stored in a cold, dry place for an extended period so that they harden. Once the propolis has become hard, it separates easily from the mesh.
  For convenient propolis collection, it is recommended to work on an inclined board in a plastic tub. First bend the “sealed” mesh mat, then push the two halves towards each other in the middle; as a result, the propolis breaks away at the bend and falls into the tub.

Mesh mats promote good air circulation, prevent excessive humidity and therefore improve the climate inside the hive.

The mesh can be easily cleaned with hot water and reused an unlimited number of times.
