When inspecting a hive, the beekeeper needs to remove one or more frames, which is very difficult without a special tool. With active use of frames in the hive, bees cover them with wax, which hardens over time and leaves the frames firmly attached to the hive. Special hive tools are used by beekeepers to prise up the frame, separate it from the hardened wax, and then remove it from the hive.
