Electric oxalic acid vaporizer – a tool for treating a bee colony with oxalic acid by fumigation.

The vaporizer is an elongated device consisting of a working section, a metal handle extension, a wooden handle, an electrical cable and clips.

The metal working section of the electric vaporizer is rectangular. It is equipped with an electric heater and a round recess with a diameter of 3.5 cm, intended for placing oxalic acid. The working section of the vaporizer is attached to the handle extension. Its function is to help protect the beekeeper from burns and possible inhalation of vapours, as well as to make it easier to introduce the acid through the hive entrance.

The wooden handle is designed for a comfortable grip of the electrical device. It is narrowed in the middle, so the tool will not slip in the hand.

A major advantage of the oxalic acid vaporizer is its robust, thick electrical cable (8 mm diameter), more than 2 metres long.

Using the oxalic acid vaporizer

The electric oxalic acid vaporizer is used for the prevention and treatment of bee colonies against varroosis. The device helps vaporise the acid inside the hive, after which the treatment settles on the bees. Thanks to the constant movement of the honey bees, the oxalic acid is distributed as widely as possible throughout the hive and reaches even those bees that were not directly exposed to it. Fumigation is recognised as one of the most effective methods for controlling the Varroa mite.

Treatment of colonies with oxalic acid using the vaporizer is carried out at temperatures from 2 to 10 °C:

• During the broodless period – once;
• During the brood period – 2-3 times (at 7-day intervals).

The vaporizer is connected to the battery using the terminals. The device requires about 15 minutes to heat up. Treatment of bees with oxalic acid is carried out at the recommended dosage - 1.5 -2 g per colony. The treatment is poured into the round recess of the working section and heated for 3 minutes.

The vaporizer must not be inserted into the hive entrance while connected to the power source. Therefore, before the procedure, the clips should be disconnected from the battery.

The electric vaporizer is narrow and passes through the hive entrance without causing contamination. Inside the hive, the cup with the treatment is held for approximately 1 minute. During this time, the oxalic acid crystals vaporise and spread through the hive. For better results, the entrance blocking strip is attached to the vaporizer to close the hive entrance. This prevents the vapour from escaping the hive and directs it as effectively as possible towards mite control.

Fumigation with oxalic acid is completely safe for bees and effective in combating varroosis. No residues of the treatment are detected in honey products.

Warning! To help prevent oxalic acid vapours from entering the respiratory tract, it is recommended to wear a respirator.
