Queen Bee Marking Pen

In international beekeeping, each year is assigned a specific colour for marking a queen bee. Five standard colours are used for this: white, yellow, red, green and blue, repeating every five years.

Why mark queen bees

A coloured mark shows the age of the queen bee, her origin, when she should be replaced, and also makes her much easier to find.

How to mark queen bees with a marker

Marking queen bees with a specially designed marker is one of the easiest methods. Experienced beekeepers mark the insects while holding them with their fingers. However, the easiest way is to use a Flober tube (details in the video).

Before you start marking, shake the marker, press the nib against a table or sheet of paper for 30-40 seconds so the paint flows into it, and make a few test marks on items to hand. After that, you can proceed to marking the insect. Please note! The marks are applied with a light touch, so do not press on the queen bee’s body.

Water-based acrylic markers have a slight characteristic odour. After the mark is applied, it quickly dissipates, and the paint dries in seconds, leaving a bright, small dot. For final controlled drying of the paint, the queen bee is placed for a few minutes in a special cage or marking cage.
