When a hive is being inspected, bees may perceive the beekeeper as a threat and start to attack. To prevent this, beekeepers use bee smokers during hive inspections. Under the influence of smoke, bees are less able to pass alarm signals to one another, giving the beekeeper the opportunity to carry out the necessary work in the hive calmly.
