Nicot cell cups are made from food-grade plastic, which does not release any toxic substances when heated or exposed to high humidity, unlike ordinary plastic. This helps ensure good acceptance of the cell cups by the bees. In Nicot queen rearing systems, the cell cups are placed in the cassette, where the queen bee begins to lay eggs. Larvae aged 6–24 hours are then transferred from the cassette to queenless colonies for further rearing.

As Nicot cell cups are of very high quality, many beekeepers use them separately from the combs for queen rearing. In this case, larvae are transferred into the cell cups using a grafting tool and fixed to the bar with wax.

To clean the cell cups, warm water may be used, with a temperature not exceeding 75°C. If overheated, the plastic may deform and the cell cup will become unsuitable for use (according to the manufacturer — Nicot, France).
