Black Steel Bee Smoker
To calm bees during hive inspections, beekeepers use special bee smokers. This black steel bee smoker is a dedicated tool used to apply smoke to bees in order to settle them.
Smoke has a calming effect on bees. People have known this since ancient times, but it was only scientifically explained in the 20th century. Smoking the hive neutralises the aromatic substances released by bees to signal danger, as these are masked by dense smoke. In addition, the bees begin to fill their honey crops with honey so that, in the event of a fire, they can leave the hive with a reserve of honey. As a result, the bee cannot bend its filled abdomen at the required angle and therefore cannot sting the beekeeper.
The smoker consists of a cylindrical body with a cone-shaped lid, made from black steel, with bellows attached to the body. The required materials are placed in a special inner cup with a mesh bottom; as they smoulder, they produce dense smoke. Ash from the smouldering materials falls through the bottom of the inner cup and remains in the space between the cup and the smoker body. The smoker bellows are made from two plates covered with imitation leather. The bellows plates are made of wood, as wood does not heat up as strongly as a metal plate.
