The Varroa tester is a modern device that helps beekeepers monitor Varroa mite infestation levels, check the condition of their bees and track parasites.
Varroa Easy Check Bee Mite Infestation Tester
Before use: - Prepare an alcohol-based liquid and dilute it with water at a ratio of 1: 4. Use a non-foaming product to make mite counting easier. - This process may make the bees very irritable. It is therefore recommended to wear protective clothing, including gloves.
1. COLLECT THE BEES
- Pour liquid into the bottom of the bowl so that it covers the bottom of the white basket. - Select a frame with sealed brood and locate the queen bee, then isolate and protect her. - Collect the bees (recommended quantity: around 300 bees; minimum: 200 bees) and place them in the basket. You can collect the required quantity using the device (the retaining device inside the bowl) or by another method you prefer. - Once the required number of bees has been collected, place the basket into the bowl with the washing liquid, fit and turn the lid back into position, then shake once so that the bees are immersed in the liquid and cannot fly out. - Remove the lid and fill the container with washing liquid up to the level marked on the transparent container.
2. SEPARATE THE VARROA MITES
- Replace the lid and tighten it, then gently shake the Varroa Easy Check tool up and down for 60 seconds. Shake gently to prevent foaming. - You can shake the Varroa Easy Check vertically, from side to side, or rotate it to optimise separation.
3. COUNTING
- Count the mites by looking into the transparent bowl or by removing the basket with the bees. - After counting the mites, you can filter the liquid through a very fine sieve into a collection container for later use.
