Because bees are highly sensitive to smells, it is advisable to avoid strongly spiced food before carrying out work in the apiary. Before handling bees, you should also avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Even the calmest bees can be provoked into attacking by such odours. Even if you follow all these rules, you cannot protect yourself 100% from bee stings without using special protective equipment, such as a beekeeper’s protective veil.
The veil is designed to prevent direct contact between the beekeeper’s face and neck and the bees. Made in a hood style, the veil has a wide lower section that sits closely over the beekeeper’s shoulders. It keeps its shape thanks to a special frame that follows the contours of the head. The veil also provides good ventilation, which is a clear advantage when working in the apiary during the summer. On a large apiary, where you may need to work for several hours at a time, comfort is very important.
Simple protective measures should not be neglected, as the consequences of a bee sting can be quite serious.
