A hive entrance closer (entrance disc) is used on every hive. Many hive designs use round entrances. The diameter of this entrance disc is 70 mm. There is a fixing hole in the centre, allowing the entrance disc to be securely attached while still being able to rotate. For turning, these entrance discs have a small tab, which older models did not have (the discs had to be turned with a nail).
At the beekeeper’s discretion, the entrance disc can be set in four positions: fully open, partially open (for protection against mice), closed with ventilation, or fully closed. During an intensive honey flow, the entrance is opened fully. In autumn, the entrance should be restricted to help prevent mice from entering the hive. When moving hives, the entrance discs are set to the "ventilation" position to allow air to reach the bees. Some beekeepers fully close some of the entrances when winter begins.
